    Skin Removal

What is the most effective way of removing excess skin? Is there a laser procedure? Or do they essentially just go in there with scissors and trim away the excess? I have always wondered how this worked but never had the nerve to ask. And yes, I know that they probably don't actually use scissors. That's just what I picture in my brain, one of my 4 year old preschool students cutting at Play-Doh with those safety scissors.

From what I have read, they make an incision and then remove the excess skin below it and stitch it back up. The type and length of the initial incision depends on where you are getting the skin removed from and how much skin there is to remove. A little more sophisticated that a 4 year old cutting Play-Doh but it does provide a good mental image, doesn't it?

And you didn't ask about this but, insurance companies will often cover the costs of these procedures since the risks of keeping the skin can be great. I guess some companies just see it as cheaper in the long run and pay for it instead of paying for you to have antibiotics and other treatment for the results of excess skin folds.

Thanks for the information Anna. I have always wondered about that myself. I suppose some people that don't have tons of weight to lose could exercise and not have to have this done. Others would not be so lucky.

This is something a friend of mine is going through now but her surgery has been pushed back. She did drop the weight on her own but it seems something is wrong with her intestine and they might need to cut that before she can go for the skin surgery. How long is the recovery time?
